I also find many of those who have been able to overcome an addiction go on to live happier and more fulfilled lives than many of those who never experienced such challenges. p>The data controller is Headline Publishing Group Limited. Never did I think I’d describe a book about alcoholism as “charming” but Gordon has such a way with words that I often found myself pulled into her life and her story in much the same way I assume booze pulled her in: with drama and a bit of a gamble. It's not an easy read, and there were times the author's self-doubt really wore on me, but it's SO REAL. I can imagine this book was a terrifying, but cathartic memoir to publish and I wish Gordon all the success.

I have been alcohol free for 2 years and sought solace mainly from online groups, friends and books. Having lost people to alcoholism, I could find some familiar behaviours in her stories, but even more so, reading about the inner turmoil of an alcoholic was quite revealing and helpful in a sense.I have read an number of Gordon's previous books (the wrong knickers, mad girl etc) and what I loved about this book is that it is a reflection of the journey you go through with addiction. It's very hard to break through shame, fear and social conditioning to speak about addiction or mental health issues and here Gordon pulls no punches about either.

The books featured on this site are aimed primarily at readers aged 13 or above and therefore you must be 13 years or over to sign up to our newsletter. I admire her dedication to achieving sobriety, you have to want it, knowing you need it it is not enough and so many die a agonising, slowest through failure. Reading this book has helped me enormously with my journey and I will revert back to it for help and guidance. As far as addiction memoirs go, I'd say it is in the top ten and trust me, I've read most of them during my long quest for sobriety. She is the presenter of the Mad World podcast and in 2016 she founded Mental Health Mates, now a global peer support network which encourages people with mental health issues to connect and get out of the house. We still judge mothers so harshly and that shame around parenting and addiction hurts far more than it helps. Her experiences at rehab shine a light on the hard work that those courageous enough to fight addiction face.

After my own day of anniversary planned excess and fun though I’ve changed my rating - she’s human and was trying to deal with life by living it - surely that’s always better than trying to deal with life by not experiencing and pushing the boundaries? Clearly addicts or alcoholics won't be reading this type of book, or probably any, they have other things to be doing with their time, as the book makes clear. I wanted to shake everyone, ‘DRINK’ I wanted to shout, “you’re allowed to drink so why aren’t you drinking properly!
